Jonathan Byers
Jonathan Byers is a major character in the first and second seasons of Stranger Things. He is the older brother of Will Byers. His life was turned upside down following the disappearance of his younger brother. During the events of second season, Jonathan assists in helping Nancy Wheeler exposing Hawkins National Laboratory as a threat following the laboratory responsible for the death of Barb and the disappearance of his younger brother. Towards the end, Jonathan helps his mother and Nancy into freeing Will from the Mind Flayer.
Jonathan is the first son of Lonnie and Joyce Byers. HIs father used to take him hunting, however, after his father made him kill a rabbit, he cried for a week in sorrow. Eventually, his father left his family, resulting in Jonathan becoming a role model for his younger brother Will. According to Joyce, Jonathan wanted to go to NYU ever since he was 6 years old. This could have been driven by his love for photography.
Jonathan is portrayed by Charlie Ross Heaton (born 6 February 1994), an English actor. Heaton was born in Bridlington, East Yorkshire, England. After moving to London when he was sixteen, Heaton joined London noise-rock band Comanechi as the drummer and toured with them for over a year. In 2015, Heaton made his acting debut with the ITV crime drama series DCI banks, playing the role of Gary McCready. Then he appeared as Riley in ITV's detective series Vera. He guest starred in BBC One's medical drama series Casualty as Jason Waycott. In 2016, he appeared in the thriller film Shut In, co-starring Naomi Watts and Oliver Platt, and directed by Farren Blackburn. In May 2017, Heaton was cast to star as Samuel Guthrie / Cannonball in New Mutants, a 2018 film based on the Marvel Comics comic book of the same name.
